Auburn Public Schools’ Student Named State Merit Winner In Discovery Education 3m Young Scientist Challenge

Discovery Education and 3M have announced that Sharvil Kaware, a 5th grade student at Calvert Elementary has been named the state merit winner for Nebraska in the 2016 Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge, the nation’s premier science competition for students grades 5-8. Kaware was chosen as one of only 27 state merit winners nationwide for developing a solution to an everyday problem that could ultimately reshape the way we live our lives.

Each January, students nationwide are asked to create a short video describing a new invention or solution that could solve or impact an everyday problem. Kaware rose to the top of the competition out of hundreds of submissions due to his science acumen, innovative thinking and exceptional communication skills demonstrated in his entry video. The budding young scientist has been recognized for his project on Anti-slip Footwear using Carbon Nanofibers. Kaware will receive special recognition on the challenge website, youngscientistchallenge.com, and a technology prize pack. His submission can be seen at the following link: https://youtu.be/xXIYaCwIlBE

Since its inception in 2008, the Young Scientist Challenge has awarded hundreds of thousands of dollars in student scholarships and prizes, paired students with world-renowned scientists to give them real-world insights and delivered much-needed science resources to millions of students, teachers and families across the country. It targets students in the years when research indicates their interest in science begins to wane and encourages them to explore scientific concepts and creatively communicate their findings. Winners have gone on to be featured in Forbes magazine’s annual “30 Under 30” list, speak in front of members of Congress and attendees at the United Nations, meet the President of the United States, and demonstrate inventions on national news programs such as ABC World News Tonight, Fox & Friends, and The Ellen Degeneres Show.
