Elementary students were intigued with native author and herpetologist, David Nieves from Bellevue, Nebraska. Mr. Nieves brought some of his reptile and amphibian friends to demonstrate how they inspired him to be a writer. He gave a very entertaining and informative presentation. He talked about the process involved in writing his books. He uses the "6 Traits of Writing" - just like students! He explained to the students how using these writing traits--REALLY WORK!!
He shared some of the stories of his world travels to gather information and specimens to study. He talked of a close encounter with a Komodo Dragon, a Jackson Chameleon, a Giant Waxy Monkey Frog, a Tree Skink, and many more.
An evening performance was held for students and their families. David continued to share stories of his fascination with reptiles and amphibians as a young boy. He described his experiences as he traveled around the world researching, photographing and writing about these amazing animals. Maggie, a seventeen year old boa constrictor entertained the audience.
PTO sponsored this educational day at Calvert Elementary.
