Teachers Learn How to Improve Critical Thinking Strategies in Students
September 13, 2007
Independent Educational Reading Consultant, Angela Maiers provided two days of professional development on improving reading strategies for teaching reading comprehension to the Auburn Elementary teachers on September 11-12, 2007. Angela provided instruction to students in Mrs. Flies first grade classroom, Mrs. Cole's second grade classroom and Mr. Conroy's fifth grade classroom. She demonstrated instructional reading strategies that teachers need to be using in their teaching of reading materials to improve critical thinking skills. All of the elementary teachers observed Angela's reading lesson demonstrations. She taught a lesson using fiction and nonfiction books, in the elementary classrooms.
To further the teacher's understanding of developing thinking skills in their students, Angela met with grade level teams of teachers to discuss and help teachers create a plan for incorporating the strategies into their instructional day. Teachers will be using the strategies in their teaching to help students become better readers, better writers, and better thinkers.
