Convocation – “a group gathered in response to a summons.” So far this year at Auburn High School, the 7-12 students have participated in three convocations.
Veterans Day
Monday, November 12, Auburn High School held their annual Veterans Day program. The high school band played “America the Beautiful” to start the program. Dennis Kimball and Mark S. Guice, MSgt, USAF told us why Veterans Day is important and why it should be important to each of us. The main reason being the military men and women fight for our freedom everyday. Each year the junior class writes an essay “Voice of Democracy,” explaining why Veterans Day is important to them. This year’s essay winners were Alex Heard 1st, Lauren Fletcher 2nd and Alex Chubick 3rd. Members of the American Legion concluded the program with a twenty-one gun salute. Taps and echo followed played by Sarah Volkmer and Lauren Fletcher. “It was a very good convocation, it makes me think differently about the Veterans,” said Travis Jones.
Boys and Girls Town Dating
Boyfriends and girlfriends. It’s something you hear everyday at school. How many of you know the types of things to look for in unhealthy relationship? On November 8, speakers from Boys and Girls Town talked to 7-12 grades about these topics. The boys and girls were divided to makes things easier to talk about. They were each told different things that applied to their gender. The girls were told how some boys want to just “hook up” with girls, and what to watch out for if your being “played.” The boys were told that some of them were players and that they use bribery and trickery to get a girl. It was taken in positive and negative ways. Shawna Georges said “The program was good for the seventh and eighth graders, but the high school has already been told all of it before.” Mr. Reiman said, “That he appreciates them coming and talking to our students, and hopefully they will benefit from it down the road.”
Seven Project
Lights, music, comedy. The Seven Project was one of the best convocations by far this year. Seven Project talked to us about bullying and making the right decisions about drugs and alcohol. “I thought it was very good. They guy brought himself down to our age again and helped us stay focused with his jokes,” said Brett Vinson. We ended the program with a dance off and Malo Jordan won. “It was one of our better convocations,” said Phillip Byfeild. The feed back from this program was very positive, and the students responded well to the speaker and the message being sent.
