February 18, 2008
Auburn High School counselor, Katherine Bucy, recently released the name of AHS's 2008 Breakfast of Champions winner. McKinsie Reeves, daughter of Kip and Autumn Reeves, was selected by AHS teachers to represent the local school.
The Breakfast of Champions event is sponsored by the Nebraska Alumni Association. Each spring, the group recognizes outstanding 8th grade student leaders from across the state for their gold-medal efforts in serving their school and community. This year’s celebration will be held on May 16, at the Bob Devaney Sports Center in Lincoln.
Ms. Reeves was chosen for the award because she possesses the ideals that serve as the award's criteria for selection -- scholarship, leadership, and service. McKinsie, an honor roll student, has been involved in many different extra curricular activities during her 7th and 8th grade career. At school, she participates in High Ability Learner (HAL) activities as well as three sports: volleyball, basketball and track. She also serves as a student manager for the high school girls' basketball team.
Besides school activities, Mc Kinsie finds time to assist youth who are involved in soccer, volleyball and basketball programs; 4-H youth camps and 4-H Junior Leader activities; and St. Paul Lutheran Church's vacation Bible School. Mc Kinsie also likes to play on a league basketball team and a club volleyball team.
Athletics have played a significant role in McKinsie' development as a leader. Because she is the only setter on her club volleyball team, she has learned the importance of team and individual character. According to Reeves, team effectiveness depends on individuals to display thoughtfulness, consideration, responsibility, and respect for teammates, coaches, fans and oneself -- traits that are important in daily life as well as on the playing field.
McKinsie's personal motto is "Dare to learn something new; Amateurs built the ark; professionals build the Titanic. (Author unknown)
Congratulations,
McKinsie! You are deserving of this honor.
