Helping Megan

April 30, 2008

Megan McConnaughey is a third grader at Calvert Elementary in Mrs. Janet Kirkendall’s class.  On April 1, 2008, she was diagnosed with a brain tumor.  After a history making surgery of eighteen hours, and a stay in the  Nebraska Med Center Pediatric ICU of several weeks, she is  resting at home before the next stage of her treatment. Megan will be receiving both chemo and radiation treatments.

Warm thoughts and sincere concerns have certainly gone out to Megan and her family, but Auburn elementary students and teachers wanted to do more.  When the school first learned of the upcoming operation, classes made banners and cards for Megan.  A “staff donation”  was given to the family for gas cards and lunch money for the many hours they will spend in the hospital.  A “Change for Megan” drive where students could put their change in a big pickle jar was held at both elementary buildings.  Over 1200 rubber bracelets were sold to all of the elementary students in grades K-6.

The “Art Show/Art Sale” will be our showcase fundraiser on Thursday, May 1 at Calvert Elementary.  Students K-3 will choose the art they would like to contribute to the Art Sale by labeling each piece with a gold star or a ribbon. By selling some of the students’ own artwork, they will each feel as if they are helping Megan.  We will have third grade docents to assist parents and community people in finding just the right piece of art for their collections.  Along with the Art Sale there will be a PTO Bake Sale and a Silent Auction showcasing a hand-made quilt made by second grade teacher, Mrs. Tia Miller and her mother.

It is heart-warming to see the communities of Peru, Auburn, Brownville, and the surrounding area working together to help Megan and her family.  Warm sincere thoughts of hope and strength for the family and best wished that everything goes well with her treatments so that Megan can again be her endearing self!
