Nebraska Governor Selects AHS for Points of Light Award

by Nancy Fuller

November 22, 2009

Auburn High School was recently selected as the winner of Governor’s Points of Light Award in the Youth Category. AHS principal, Kevin Reiman, teacher, Kandi Rohrs, and four seniors – Sara Mason, Hannah Harmon, Jeff Boden and Martha Spangler represented the school at the luncheon with Nebraska Governor, Dave Heineman, and Nebraska First Lady, Sally Ganem.

The Points of Lights Award is for doing outstanding volunteer work that promotes volunteer efforts in building stronger Nebraskan communities. The governor presents the award quarterly at a special ceremony in Lincoln to exemplary youth groups, individual adults, and groups. The award is sponsored by Woodmen of the World.

The AHS Points of Light application and letters of support referenced the 2009 Community Day Service, in which juniors and seniors gave about 250 hours to organizations through out the school district. A few examples of the ten service projects completed during the day include painting curbs in Peru, refurbishing a walking trail in Brownville’s arboretum, cleaning up areas of Sheridan cemetery, and helping spruce up Legion Park after a long winter. Auburn High’s unique club called Teen Clean Gang was also commended for its work in keeping the community clean and neat by picking up litter each year.

Other projects that were recognized included the Future Business Leaders of America’s mentoring partnership with Head Start, AHS Blood Mobiles, and Auburn Middle School’s Pennies for Cancer Patients.

These projects and many others display AHS's commitment to giving back to the school district's communities.
