Calvert Elementary: Teacher Pages: Shirley Snyder - Title I

Story image 1

Shirley Snyder

August 11, 2008

Hello, I am Shirley Snyder and I teach Title I Reading and Math teacher at Calvert Elementary School.  Since I was five years old and 'taught' my unwilling little brother, I have wanted to be a teacher!

I work each day with boys and girls who need extra help in Math and Reading to make them more successful in the classroom.  Sometimes we have extra practice time.  Sometimes I use various methods to present the material.  At other times one on one assistance  and interaction helps a student understand a concept.  I truly believe that all students are able to learn and that makes my work a constant challenge as well as a total joy when a child 'gets' it.

Education:

Peru State College - Bachelors Degree in Education

University of Nebraska-Lincoln- Masters Degree in Education

Teaching Career:

1983-2008  Auburn Public Schools Title I Reading and Math

Family, Hobbies, and Interests:

My family moved to Auburn, Nebraska in 1979.  At the time our son Scott was in seventh grade, daughter Amy was in fifth grade and the baby, Mandy, was only one.  All of our children graduated from Auburn Public Schools and my husband  and I believe that they received an excellent education.  They are all grown and married now, and we have three wonderful grandchildren who are (of course) 'way above average'. My husband Bill, has been employed at Peru State College since1970 in various capacities, and currently teaches Economics there.

I have been a member of the Apple Valley Reading Council since my first year of teaching and this involvement provided me with great support and a strengthening of my teaching skills.  As a result of this positive experience I became involved in the Nebraska State Reading Association and have served as the State President and am currently IRA State Co-Coordinator.  The promotion of literacy throughout the state of Nebraska is our organization's goal and this also serves as a personal goal.
