High Ability Learners: What is HAL?

What is HAL?

June 21, 2009

HAL stands for High Ability Learner.  According to Nebraska Rule 3, a High Ability Learner is defined as

"a student who gives evidence of high performance capability in such areas as intellectual, creative, or artistic capacity or in specific academic fields and who requires services or activities not ordinarily provided by the school in order to develop those capabilities fully".

District 29 is dedicated to preparing all of our students to be productive and responsible citizens in an ever-changing world.  In keeping with this statement, our schools recognize the need for providing programming for High Ability Learners.  Summer camps, Saturday camps, off-campus activities, field trips, and competitions such as Math Counts and News Bowl will be available according to student interest, staff availability, and funding.  In addition, Auburn High School has partnered with Peru State College to implement a scholarship program for students who complete the gold level of the Principal's Achievement Challenge (PAC).
