August 19, 2008

Hello, I am Claudette Stevens and I teach Computer Science and Applications at Auburn High School. I enjoy being a teacher. I also sponsor the computer team. Computer classes are taught at 4 levels of Programming and 2 levels of Applications. Each class period has students working at different levels in both programming and applications. The Advanced Applications students are busy filming and editing all the different school activities for the End of School Video. They also have done projects using both Adobe Illustrator and Photo Shop.  Movie Making students are learning how to use Final Cut Pro and then will work on developing there own productions.

Beginning programming students are working on basic programming skills. They have covered input, output, random numbers and integers, exit methods, different types of looping, using formulas to solve the problem and writing check statements. The advanced programmers are eagerly awaiting the problem from the E-Biz contest in Omaha. It will be here in early October. This problem is written by officers from the Omaha National Bank and is to help students relate to the type of problems and programs needed in the business world. The middle two groups of programmers are finishing their basic programming work and looking forward to working on the Omaha Contest Beginners level.

I enjoy helping students to learn and understand about computers and their uses. It is super to watch students mature as the years go by. I feel my job is to encourage and help them to understand when they have a problem writing a program. I believe all students are able to learn. It is very rewarding to see how former students have used their programming skills when they join the work force. Teaching is very enjoyable and rewarding to me. It also allows me to associate with a neat group of fellow teachers.

My husband, Leslie and I have fun traveling. We have gone to Continental Europe, rented a car and traveled on three different occasions. We had two very special trips to England to fly hot air balloons. We are both pilots and exchanged visits with a couple from south of London.
The past five summers we have spent time in Alaska. Beautiful land, lots of nice friendly people and sled dogs.

We help our friends, the Redington’s with their dog team at the Iditarod Headquarters for three weeks each summer. Four years ago we brought home two puppies and now they have six of their own. Our dogs are all related to dogs that have completed the Iditarod to Nome as winners or top finishers. So we are busy training our dog team to pull our sled.

We also spend time creating quilts. We have completed eight quilts and several smaller wall hangings. At the present we have two quilts in the works.
