The Auburn Cheerleading Squad hosted a private Stunt and Performance Camp with Universal Cheerleading Association (UCA) on July 11 through 13. Two girls that cheer at different universities in the midwest came to Auburn High School to put on the camp.
The camp was for Auburn cheerleaders and Coach Joellen Hamann to focus on stunting and performing stunts in dances and cheers.
The 18 girls and one boy learned two dances, one cheer, three sideline cheers and advanced stunting from elevators to elevator extensions, liberties, full downs and basket tosses.
"The girls worked extremely hard," said Hamann. "It was three eight hour days and they left sore everyday, but returned with positive attitudes the next day. I am impressed with how fast they learned and caught on to the new skills being taught. Overall, it was a successful camp that prepared my squad for the beginning of the football season and any competition we will attend."
Awards Given
Awards were given at the end of the camp. Stunting awards went to Miranda Leslie for Most Improved Backspot; Brooke Wissler for Most Improved Flier; Bethan Sharp for Most Improved Base; and Alex Chubick for Best Overall Spotter.
The Most Improved Overall, including dancing, cheering and stunting, went to Rachel Henry, Mariah Mellage and Taryn Oliver. The Most Spirited Award went to Bailey Collins.
Five Selected for All-Star Team
There was also a tryout for the UCA All-Star Team. The girls will have a chance to attend many events with cheerleaders from across the world, including trips to London, the Macy's Day Parade, a College Bowl game and other various events.
"I was very proud to have five of my cheerleaders selected for this team," said Hamann.
The five girls selected for the All-Star Team were Bailey Collins, Brooke Wissler, Kloe Kratz, Chris Wenzl and Emily Boruch.
