Special Education Services: Paraeducators

Story image 1

Paraeducators, Partners in Education

December 20, 2007

Paraeducators, under the direction and guidance of supervising teachers, perform a variety of tasks throughout the school day. Duties may include assisting the teacher in preparing and presenting instructional materials, tutoring students, and monitoring computer and library activities.  Paras may also supervise field trips, assist with behavior management and, at the elementary level, oversee lunchroom/playground activities. Paraeducators are often called upon to transport and/or accompany students to activities at other school buildings within the district, or to various work sites and businesses in the community.

All paraeducators employed by Auburn Public Schools have received training in basic para duties and responsibilities. Continuing education is provided both on and off campus as availability and need arises. Currently, all district paraeducators participate in continuing education through UNL's Project PARA Self Study Program.

District 29 Paraeducators play an important role in providing expanded learning opportunities to children in both the Resource Room and the regular education classroom. They are dedicated, caring professionals who are positive role models for students of all ages. Paraeducators understand the need for ethical behavior and confidentiality and, as contributing members of a team, develop special relationships with the teachers and students they work with, parents, and the community.
