Auburn Public Schools to honor Calvert Elementary as a National Blue Ribbon Award Recipient
Auburn Public Schools will welcome Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts and Miss Nebraska Allison Tietjen to Calvert Elementary on Tuesday, November 21st at 8:30am for Calvert’s National Blue Ribbon Award Ceremony. The ceremony will include comments from Governor Pete Ricketts, Miss Nebraska Allison Tietjen, Auburn Superintendent Kevin Reiman, and Calvert Principal Jackie Kelsay. Autumn Reeves and Cindy Cole, Calvert Teachers who attended the National Blue Ribbon Ceremony in Washington, D.C., will unveil the National Blue Ribbon Flag and Plaque. The ceremony will close with the students and staff raising the National Blue Ribbon Flag outside of Calvert Elementary.
The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program honors public and private elementary, middle and high schools where students achieve very high learning standards or are making notable improvements in closing the achievement gap. All schools are honored in one of two performance categories:
- Exemplary High Performing Schools are among their state’s highest performing schools as measured by state assessments or nationally normed tests.
- Exemplary Achievement Gap Closing Schools are among their state’s highest performing schools in closing achievement gaps between a school’s subgroups and all students over the past five years.
Calvert Elementary was recognized as an Exemplary High Performing School.
During the National Blue Ribbon Ceremony on November 7th, U.S. Secretary Betsy DeVos highlighted Calvert Elementary in her speech stating, “Faculty and staff at Calvert Elementary School in Auburn, Nebraska, personalize student learning with differentiated and supportive instruction. Students are able to learn and advance at their own pace. Those who need additional time on any given subject get it. While those who are ready to move on, can.
When we focus on the needs of each child, success can then be measured by what he or she learns and masters, not by how long one sits at a desk.”
Comments from Auburn Superintendent Kevin Reiman
I am very proud that Calvert Elementary has been chosen for the 2017 National Blue Ribbon Award. It speaks to the hard work of our students, teachers, staff, Board of Education, parents, and community. The growth in student learning under the leadership of Principal Jackie Kelsay and supported by School Improvement Director Dr. Nancy Fuller and Special Education Director Amy Kroll has been tremendous. Our teachers and staff are truly dedicated to student success. This award reflects that dedication.
I would also like to thank and acknowledge our all of our teachers and staff, parents, community, and organizations that support our students. Organization like Auburn Sixpence, the Auburn Backpack Program, Calvert PTO, and ESU4 are key partners in our success.
